ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
I am a multi-disciplinary artist working in stitch, fabrics, printmaking, performance, and photography. Drawing remains at the base of all practises.
Over the last two years I have extended my portfolio with a series of linen dresses. These are 19th century French farmer’s smocks which become a platform for making. The ideas are hand embroidered, printed and dyed directly onto the linen and then sometimes worn to emphasise the ritual. With varying starting points such as larder, spring, weather, storm, bread, and star the dresses can highlight a historical event or celebration. Performance attaches deeper importance of place.
PARADISE MOON CUSHIONS
The Paradise moon cushions are hand made with dyed antique linens and luscious velvets. The paradise embroidered birds perch on Shwe-Shwe African moons.
I have linked my birth place, Cape Town with the use of the African printed moons.
The Almanac and the moon’s phases allow me to work with nature’s cycles. Adding words to the cushions to emphasise this.
I intend the cushions to convey a sense of magic.
LINO PRINTS
I make linoprints that describe habitat, almanac and folklore.
The prints use strong colours, sharp lines and flat plains. Layers are built up with the multi plate technique or prints are jig sawed together for hand printing on Japanese paper.
The central figures, lounging ladies, parrots and puffins proudly represent their land.
I like to draw directly in the landscape, sitting on cliff tops or hiding in caves, building up stories in various sketchbooks.
I hope to present humour and familiarity in my prints.
I have a studio at home at Scarsick in Treneglos and teach Art and Photography part-time.
I studied at Chelsea School of Art and Design, gained a 2:1 degree in Fine Art (Sculpture) from Kingston University. My PGCE in Secondary Art teaching was awarded by Bristol University.
